According to the Rivers State Police Command, 31 people died in a stampede on Saturday morning at the site of an outreach program organized by a new generation church in Port Harcourt.

The church, the Kings Assembly, was alleged to have invited members of the public to attend the event and offered to provide gift goods and refreshments.
The church is located in Port Harcourt’s GRA axis, but the ceremony was to be held in the Port Harcourt Polo Club, a larger venue to accommodate the expected throng.
Grace Iringe-Koko, the acting spokeswoman for the State Police Command, verified the 31 deaths, stating the church had arranged the outreach to hand out palliatives to the impoverished before the deaths.
